Chemotherapy : Any chemical treatment to kill or halt the replication and or spread of cancerous cells in a patient is called Chemotherapy.
Radiation: The use of ionizing radiation to treat disease, especially cancer is called radiation therapy.
Other Disciplines that assist in implementation of plan of care for the patients in chemotherapy and radiation:
In a cancer care team there are many professionals from different disciplines to give care and treatment (such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy) for patients with cancer. They are
1. Dosimetrist
A certified person who got special training in Radiation therapy, who calculate , plan and deliver the correct dose of radiation to the patient with cancer.
2. Medical oncologist / Oncologist
A specialized doctor who can diagnose as well as give treatment including chemotherapy to patients with Cancer.
3. Pharmacist
A person who is a licenced professional , to make sure that the prescribed medicine is effective and safe for the patient. A pharmacist need the ququalification of bachelor degree in pharmacy ( minimum degree).
4.Radiologist: A specialized doctor , who can assist in diagnosis by interpreting the x-ray xnd other images of patient.
5. Radiologic technologist: Allied health professionals, who can assist the patients during imaging tests, check and develop images.
6. Radiation therapists: A person who got specialised training in use of radiation equipments , and positioning the patient for therapy.
7. Registered Nurse ( RN): A registered and licenced nurse, who can educate, treat and assess the patient and support family members. She assist Doctors and works in collaborating with professionals from other disciplines to give radiation and chemotherapy for the patients with cancer.
A RN can become Nurse practitioner, Clinical nurse specialists, Nurse anesthetist by getting specialised training and licence.
8. Psychologist: A professional who have a bachelor degree in psychology and specialised training in clinical psychology, he can assess the emotional and mental status of the patient and assist them emotionally.
9. Psychiatrist: A specialized doctor in Psychiatry, can diagnose any mental issues for the patient and treat them. Provides counselling for Patients with emotional and mental problems.
10. Occupational therapists: A person or a social worker with specialised training in occupational therapy. They can assist the patient in the rehabilitation process to get the appropriate occupation for those with some form of disability due to disease and treatment.
11. Chaplain: A religious person or priest or pastor, who can assist the patient in their spiritual needs.
12. Dietition or Nutritionist
Assisting in patient's nutritional needs by planning the diet plan according to the treatment receiving by the patient.
13. Pain specialists and Palliative care team
Pain specialists includes Doctors, pharmacist and nurses, who are specialised in Pain control treatment.
14. Palliative care team provides palliative care for the cancer patients, managing the symptoms, providing pain control methods , treating the side effects and delivering the end of life care.
