The cell membrane or the plasma membrane is composed of phospholipids, cholesterol and proteins.

Carbohydrates are a major component of the plasma membrane and they are found on the exterior surface of the cells. They are bound to proteins(forming glycoproteins) and lipids (forming glycolipids). Hence glycoproteins and glycolipids face the cell exterior.
