Answer #1

Delta H of the reaction can be calculated using the given reactions

C (s) + O2 (g) ------> CO2(g) multiplying the equation by 2

2 C (s) + 2 O2 (g) ------> 2 CO2(g) ---------------(I)

H2 (g) + ½ O2 (g) -------> H2O multiplying the equation by 2

2 H2 (g) + O2 (g) -------> 2 H2O ---------------(II)

C2H5OH (l) + 2 O2 ------------> 2CO2 (g) + 2 H2O (l)-------- (III)

Adding equation I and II we get

2 C (s) + 2 H2 (g) + 3 O2 (g) -------> 2 CO2(g) + 2 H2O ---------- (IV)

Subtracting equation III from IV we get

2 C (s) + 2 H2 (g) + O2 (g) -------> C2H5OH (V)

Therefore overall Delta H for the equation (V) is

=2(-394.51)- 2(-285.8)-(-875)

= -789.02 + 571.6 + 875

Delta H of the reaction=657.58
