Due to periodicity assumption implicit in ewald summation , application of PME method to physical system requires the imposition of periodic symmetry .

PROS

in molecular dynamic simulation it avoid problem with boundary effect caused by finite size ,more like an infinite one ,at the cost of periodicity effect .

CONS

PBC also introduce co-relational artifacts that do not respect the translational invariance of the system and require constraint on composition and size of simulation box .

The size of simulation box must be large enough to prevent periodic artifacts from occuring during unphysical topology of the simulation .
