Read the attached medical report, and answer the following questions:
In your own words, describe the body location of Ms.
Paine's injury.
The radiologist described the injury as "An acute
fracture involving the proximal diaphysis of the femur". What do
"proximal" and "diaphysis" mean?
The radiologist further described the injury as
"Severely angulated laterally and anteriorly and slightly
impacted". What does this mean?.
The radiologist observed that "The femoral head
appears to be seated in the acetabulum". What is the "acetabulum'?
Is this the appropriate placement of the femoral head?
What are "Sequelae"?
The report describes "Cortical thickening" more
distally from a previous injury. Please describe the process of
cortical thickening
•MEDICAL REPORT
Name: Leslie Paine Hospital No: 20-124-879 DOB: 09/01/1986
Radiology Report
Examination of: Left Femur
Clinical Symptoms: Left leg pain, status post fall
during a soccer game
Left Femur, Two Views: No prior studies available for
comparison. There is evidence of an acute fracture involving the
proximal diaphysis of the femur. This is severely angulated
laterally and anteriorly and slightly impacted. Additional acute
fractures not seen. The femoral head appears to be seated within
the acetabulum. There is some cortical thickening involving the
slightly more distal femoral diaphysis from a previous injury. No
gross destructive change observed.
Conclusion: Acute displaced fracture involving the proximal diaphysis of the left femur. Additional fractures not seen, although views are somewhat limited. There is also a cortical thickening that is likely sequelae from a previous injury.
Paolo Rossi, MD Radiologist
●Ms.Paine's injury is located in the left side of hip.The fracture has occured in between the head of femur and upper shaft of the femur. The fracture is near to the hip joint angled laterally and anteriorly .
●The proximal refers to the bone ending in the region of acetabulum or the upper end in the femur .It can be called as hip joint .The lower end of the femur articulate with tibia and fibula to form the knee joint .This is called as distal end.The part present between proximal and distal end is termed ti be diaphysis
●Angulated refers to the formation if an angle when a bone is fracture here the angle made is lateral and anterior. In simple the bone is protruding at te sides and in front direction making an angle if measured
●Normally the femoral head is like a ball getting attached to a socket .Here the femur head is seated in this socket called as acetabulum. This us the appropriate placement of femoral head
●Sequelea refers to a current injury or condition which has happened due to previous incidents or injury
●Cortical thickening
When there is a fracture recovery of bone after an injury or infection ,initially there will be loss of venous blood supply ,this will trigger periosteal bone formation and leads to increase in the tubular structure of vein causing thickening at the bone region called as cortical thickening
