3. A chemical reactions are mainly of two types, first is solution phase chemical synthesis and second type is solid phase chemical synthesis. In solution phase type all the reactants used to convert the desired products are in liquid state or have a partial to complete solubility in the solvent used for the reaction to take place. In solid phase type the all the reactants are in sold state or may be reaction take place on the solid resin.
In solution phase chemical reactions, we need to use a single or the mixture of the solvents (methanol, ethanol, THF, DMF, dichloromethane, CHCl3, 1,4-dioxane, ether, DMSO and other solvents) to dissolve all the reactants used for the chemical reaction. These solvent have low to high boiling point range. The product formation process is either at room temperature or at the reflux temperature that means heating the reaction mixture at the boiling point of the solvent used for the reaction purpose.
The process of the conversion of the reactants to product in presence of the solvent, the heating of the reaction mixture is required for the few hours time to complete the reaction (formation of the product with maximum yield). It is also called the refluxing the reaction mixture. During heating the reaction mixture in the reaction assembly (comprises of the round bottom flask attached condenser with cold water circulation and fitted with guard tube) , the evaporation of the solvent vapours at their boiling point is occurred . These vapours were condensed back to the reaction assembly due to the condenser with circulated cold water.
This process of evaporation and condensation of the vapours from the reaction mixture will be continue in order to complete the product formation without any loss of the solvent used in the reaction mixture. It may take long hours time for the completion of the reaction. Once the reaction is completed and confirmed by TLC or analytical methods like HPLC/GC/MS, the solvent used can be recovered back by evaporation or distillation process and the product formed shall be obtained by work-up of reaction followed by the purification methods.

9. (4 pts.) When refluxing, a mixture of toluene and water is refluxing and condensing in the Hickman still head. A specific mixture of toluene and water will actually boil at a LOWER TEMPERATURE then either pure toluene or pure water. This is the azeotrope mixture, toluene and water can from an azeotrope. The practical consequence of this is that the toluene solvent will always have at least some water in it when it boils, which is how we are...

ESTIONS: 1. Many students do not recover 100% of the original mixture. Describe at least two possible problems that could cause less than 100% recovery of the mixture. 2. A student received a mixture that actually contained 50.0% salt and 50.0% sand. At the end of the experiment, this student calculated that his sample was composed of 45.2% salt and 54.8% sand. What might he have done (or not done correctly) during the experiment to cause this...
1. An air conditioning plant using refrigerant R 134a has evaporating and condensing temperatures of 0°C and 35°C, respectively. a) Calculate the refrigerating effect for the plant. If the duty is 352 kW of refrigeration, determine the mass flow rate of refrigerant. b) c) What is the volumetric flow rate under suction conditions? d) Calculate the work done in the compression and the corresponding compressor power e) Evaluate the heat rejected and the rate of heat rejection. f) Calculate the...
What is the purpose of centrifuging the mixture prior to distillation? this is a question in a lab where we fermented glucose to make ethanol. thank you
A fuel-air mixture is placed in a cylinder fitted with a piston. The original volume is 0.345-L. When the mixture is ignited, gases are produced and 885 J of energy is released. To what volume will the gases expand against a constant pressure of 635 mmHg, if all the energy released is converted to work to push the piston? I dont understand why you use Pascals and m^3? can you explain
What is the purpose of adding water after cooling the reaction mixture in this experiment? I understand it is to precipitate the product, but what exactly does water do in this, what impurity does it get rid of and how? Mesostillbenedibromide crude with KOH and triethyl glycol in a double elimination to produce Diphenylacetylene. Water is added after the reaction mixture is cooled. Then it is put through vacuum filtration, and further recrystallized with 7:3 etoac:water in a hot water...
Describe the operon in bacterial DNA and explain the purpose of aligning certain genes back to back.
What is the purpose of shaking the ether layer with a saturated NaCl solution? What is the purpose of adding CaCl2 to the ether layer? In this experiment you separated a mixture of benzoic acid, 4-t-butylphenol, and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene. You were instructed to dissolve the mixture in tert-butyl ether and extract with sodium bicarbonate first. Why can’t you extract with sodium hydroxide first? Explain. A mixture of lactic acid (pKa 3.86) and ascorbic acid (pKa 11.80) are dissolved in an organic...
