What is meant by the term marginalized population? Identify populations that may be marginalized in regard to health disparities and discuss why this may be so.
Marginalized Population is the putting of a particular group of people under discrimination and unequal distribution in social, economic, cultural, and political life. Example of one marginalized population in the United States is African-American group. They still marginalized by race and ethnicity. Around 13.2% of the U.S population is occupied by African-Americans. These black populations are experienced with health disparities with access to care, mental health, preventive services and the availability of healthcare services. Blacks are more risk for chronic diseases and lack of access to health care worsens and increase their mortality rate. They will not meet the doctor at early due to increased healthcare cost. Social and economic conditions make health differences in African-Americans compared to other populations. The cultural differences also have great influence in health care disparities. Health care providers need extra training to understand their cultural values. The HIV, Cancer, AIDS are the leading cause of death in African-Americans. The uneducation, lifestyle behavior, loss of economic opportunities altogether results in lack of access to preventive services. In addition, vaccination gap to prevent certain diseases also contribute to health disparities in African-Americans.
