The author essentially says that the behavior was commonplace (i.e. respecting patients at bedside and speaking disrespectfully about them in private). How can this type of behavior be detrimental in a race-related context as it relates to how a person of color is treated by medical professionals with perverse views of people of color? These actions can cause medical errors, a hostile work environment and lost productivity as a result of staff turnover. What are the consequences of racism in the clinical setting?
