For the problem below, how can you tell that these are suppose to be Sample data instead of Population data? From the look of it, when it says "... all 10 students took to complete an assignment in a statistics class", I suspected that they're saying the mentioned statistics class only has 10 students; therefore, it'd be Population instead of Sample, but I am wrong.

So how can I tell that there are more than 10 students in that statistic class from the given prompt below?

The following data give the times (in minutes) that all 10 students took to complete an assignment in a statistics class.

15 26 16 36 31 13 29 18 21 39

Answer #1

Note that in a class there is a rare possibility that only 10 students are there.

the line "the following data gives the time in minutes that all 10 students took to complete an assignment in a statistics class" means that data is provided for all 10 students. There is no mathematical way to show that all 10 students means population or sample, it depends on the understanding of the language of the problem.

You design a survey that probes aspects of an individual’s emotional life, and using this survey are able to compute an accuracy index score ranging from 0 (completely miserable) to 100 (nauseatingly happy). You know that the standard deviation of the population (sigma) equals 8; however you do not know, and want to know, what the mean of the population (mu) is. Rather than give the...
