Cold war is the term used since there was no large scale direct conflict happened during this phase instead there was multiple proxy wars played out by these regional superpower by supporting regional conflicts and these large amount of casualties are the result of these regional conflict only like Korean war, Chinese civil wars, Vietnamese war ,Soviet Afghan war to name few which was supported by each of these blocs on one hand and other in against

The direct conflict was avoided because of nuclear diterance and since there was no direct conflict and the continued tension and hostilities are there the era was termed as cold war.
