Tarry stool generally is caused due to burns or injuries internally in the digestive system. The stool turns bloody or tarry stool which is dark red or black in color. Tarry stools indicate bleeding or other injuries in your gastrointestinal tract. One may also have dark, discolored bowel movements after eating dark or colored foods.

Internal bleeding in upper part of intestine or any area of body can cause tarry stool. It can occur due to inflammation, pain in stomach due to stomach disorder.
