Understanding the sampling process will contribute to your ability to critique research from a consumer's point of view. This week's Forum Discussion will help you to develop your sampling strategy based upon your PICOT. It should be approached in relation to the parameters or attributes of the study population, representative of the defined population, appropriateness of the sampling plan to the research design, appropriateness and justification of the sample size, and evidence that the rights of human participants (subjects) have been protected.
Here are some guidelines to help you:
|
A |
Define your target population and sample. |
|
B |
Discuss your sampling approach in terms of their nature, use, advantages, and disadvantages: convenience, quota, and purposive. |
|
C |
Indicate the inclusion and exclusion criteria. |
|
D |
Discuss the factors that influenced the determination of sample size. |
|
E |
Discuss potential threats to internal and external validity as sources of sampling bias. |

* samples are convenient to draw and execute
* ensures population evenly sample so that conclusions are reliable * eliminates the clustered selection of samples
Disadvantages
* information may not represent the popukation
* respondents observation and information may be misleading
* willingness to co operate and work will not be there
* researchers prejudiced to some persons or groups.
C. The inclusion would include:
* children below 14years of age
* who are physically and mentally right to understand things
* who are willing to participate
The exclusion would be
* children with mental abnormalities
* children above 15years
* who are not willing to participate
D. The factors influencing
* the margin of the error
* the confidence level
* the proportion or percentage of the sample
E. Potential threats to internal and external validity
External: population subjects, interaction of subject selection and research
Internal :maturation, testing, instrumentation and so on.
