Categorical propositions
Categorical propositions are statements that contain a subject and a predicate term and this statement asserts or denies that all or some subjects ( category) are included in the predicate term. Categorical propositions also called as categorical statement and is of four types, they are Universal affirmative, Universal negative, Particular affirmative and Particular negative.
Categorical propositions with examples:
1. Universal Affirmative ( A)
example: All politicians are corrupt
2. Universal negative ( E )
example: No politicians are corrupt
3. Particular affirmative ( I)
example: Some politicians are corrupt
4. Particular negative ( O)
example: Some politicians are not corrupt
Categorical logic and its importance
Categorical logic is one of the oldest idea related to logic. Logic is a method of Human thought that involves thinking in a linear , step by step manner about how a problem can be solved. Categorical logic is the logic of classes or categories. Aristotle ( Greek philosopher : 300BC) proposed the idea of categorical logic and its four types. Several operations based on mathematics or philosophy can be performed based on a categorical statement such as Conversion, contraposition and observation.
* Contraposition: The statement of the form " If not Q then not P" , given the statement " if P then Q" . We use logic in every day life. Understanding categorical logic , its types and its application in personal and professional life may help us greatly to understand the situation and manage it. In the field of Medicine and other health care , decision making process is of great importance. Logic is the basic of decision making process.
