Regulation

• The newborn must be kept under a neutral thermal condition.
• Mechanusm of heat loss in neonates are Radiation, Conduction from the infant to the surface in direct contact, Convection from the infant to the surrounding area and evaporation of water from the skin.

Metabolism

• Errors of inborn metabolism do not present immediately after birth.
• If the baby has acifosis or altered mental status, ssevere hypotonia or hypertonia, uunusual odour, disturbed acid/base status, hiccoughs and organomegsly then the newborn is suspected of inborn errors of metabolism.

Cognition and Sensation

• The modern view on early sensation and perception is that infants come into the world with sll their sensory systems functioning to some degree and that subsequent development occurs at a very rapid pace.
• Newborns begin visual exploration of the world minutes after leaving the womb. They are able to scan their environment and pause to look at objects oor people. Although they don't clearly see as adults, their vision improves rapidly over the first few months.

Immunity

• Soon after birth, newborn is exposed to bacteria, virus and fungus.
• In the first three months of life, newborns develop immunologic competence, cells acquire immunity and gains an antigenic experience.
