Are you prepared for an Emergency- A Disaster?
Ready.gov and The American Red Cross suggests that everyone should be:
“Red Cross Ready”

What does that mean? It’s important to prepare for possible disasters and other emergencies. Natural and human caused disasters can strike suddenly, at anytime and anywhere. There are three actions everyone can take that can help make a difference

• • Be informed
• • Make a plan
• • Get a kit

Be Red Cross Ready Checklist
• I know what emergencies or disasters are most likely to occur in my community.
• I have a family disaster plan and have practiced it.
• I have an emergency preparedness kit.
• At least one member of my household is trained in first aid and CPR/AED.
• I have taken action to help my community prepare.

A public motivation campaign knows as 3 Days, 3 Ways, Are You Ready Urges you, your family, and the community to prepare for emergencies and disasters. We can all participate and take simple steps that will help us prepare and be ready to survive on your own for a minimum of 3 Days following a disaster.
Something to keep in mind: For large disasters, you may not receive any government assistance for up to 7 Days.

We are all more than aware of this as we watch the news informing us of many natural disasters around the world and in the US; 2018 seemed an especially disastrous year with Hurricane’s, extensive flooding, and fires in the United States. In the northwest we experience small earthquakes and think of the “Big One” that may come. Natural disasters such as the 2014 Oso landslide and wildfires in Washington remind us of natural disasters we face here in the Pacific Northwest. All of these disasters where ever they occur affect us in many ways and get us to start thinking about how we can help and how we should prepare ourselves and our families “just in case.”

Let’s get prepared. This assignment has 2 parts:
Part 1
Students will research specific online websites in order to create a list of supplies needed for:
• Basic First Aid Kit
• Emergency Kit/Disaster Preparedness Kit (3 days)

Prepare two lists of supplies for both of the above (1st aid kit and Emergency Kit):

1) either for just for yourself-individual

or

2) a family of four or your family.

Think about your needs, your family-personalize your lists. The information needed to create your list can be found on the following websites:

Part 2

Sadly we continue hearing about "school" shootings" and winter 2017 Highline College experienced a "lockdown." Thankfully there was no active shooter on campus but this event and the news keeps the possibility of something happening on Highlines campus in our minds. So what are some important safety factors we need to keep in mind while on campus?
Let’s think about our safety on the Highline College campus and take some time to find out and be better prepared.

• HC Alert and School Report.org-why should students sign up for this.

• Automated External Defibrillator (AED) where are they located-who can use them?
• Who do you call first for on campus emergencies? And what are the extensions for campus safety/security? When is the campus safety staff available?
• What services does HC Campus Safety staff provide? List 2
• Review the “Emergency plan” posted in the classroom and make a list of the emergencies/disasters covered.
