Hypertension - This is also known as high blood pressure and it is a medical condition where the blood pressure in the arteries is highly elevated.
There are many ways to control high blood pressure like maintaining ideal body weight, regular exercise, healthy diet, reduce sodium diet, limited alcohol consumption, quit smoking, cutting down on caffeine, managing stress, monitoring blood pressure at home, regular doctor visits and taking support of family and friends.
During my time at the Wellness Fair I came across three clients who were suffering from hypertension. Their names were Thomas, Dickerson and Harrison. They had different habits and were almost of the similar age group.
Thomas is a 63 year old man who was suffering diabetes as well as hypertension. He had just amputated his left foot due to gangrene and has a prosthetic foot. He is currently maintaining a healthy lifestyle. His height is 5.10 feet and his weight 145 lbs. This is a ideal body weight that he is maintaining and his BP is 120/80 mmhg. He takes his medications regularly and follow strict diet, regular exercise and regular doctor visits.
Dickerson is a 70 year old man who is a chain smoker and also an alcoholic. He is obese since he weighs 360 lbs. His wife has compelled him to join the Wellness Fair since she is worried about his hypertension and is scared that he would get a stroke. Dickerson loves to eat fatty meat but his wife has cut down his diet since of late. He gets tired easily and most of the time has profuse sweating. His BP when he joined the wellness program was 180/100 mmhg. This has reduced to 140/90 mmhg. He need to cut down on alcohol and quit smoking. He is consuming nicotine chewing gums to stop smoking. Regular motivation will help him reach a health lifestyle.
Harrison is a 67 year old man who has just retired. He just lost his spouse, a year ago. He use to be a professor but had to stop since he got hypertension. His hypertension conditions increased post the death of his wife and the stress could be the reason of his hypertension. He has not been able to sleep and maintain a healthy lifestyle. His BP is 130/90 mmhg. He is a light smoker and consumes alcohol sometimes.
As a fitness instructor, it was a pleasure to meet people and share ideas of a healthy lifestyle and set goals for them and help them maintain their weight, BP and health lifestyle. At times we would even share jokes and have a good time. It was a healthy ambience during my time as a fitness trainer at the wellness fair.
