Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid.It is a type of NSAID ,sub group Nonselective COX inhibitors.It is rapidly converted in the body to salicylic acid which is responsible for most of the action.

1.Pharmacological actions of Aspirin(pharmacodynic action)

  • Aspirin works as analgesic,antipyretic,anti inflammatory drug.
  • Aspirin increase the cellular metabolism especially in skeletal muscles leads to heat production
  • increase .these are metabolic effects due to aspirin

Aspirin action on respiratory system depends on dose of the drug.Excessive of aspirin dose cause Hyper ventilation,and futher leads to depression of respiratory rate .

2.Complications due to Aspirin

  • Complications due to analgesic dose of aspirin are nausea,epigastric distress,increased occult blood loss instools due to effect of aspirin is gastric mucosal damage
  • It may cause hyper sensitivity
  • Anti inflammatory dose of aspirin (3-5 gms/day)produce the syndrome called salicylism.Salicylism means dizziness,tinnitus,vertigo,hearing and vision impairment for reversible period of time mental confusion,electrolyte imbalance and hyper ventilation
  • It causes liver damage in children with the Rheumatoid arthritis

Fatal complication was acute salicylate poisioning when serum level>50 mg /DL.   

3.Contraindications/precautions

  • Aspirin containdicated in patients with peptic ulcer beacuse it causes gasrtic erosion and occult blood loss
  • Aspirin should not used In liver disease,it may report liver necrosis
  • It shouldn't used in Children with rheumatoid arthritis,it may cause liver Damage
  • It was contraindicated in diabetics and patients with low cardiac reserve.
  • Aspirin should be stopped 1 week before elective surgery,it have bleeding effect
  • Aspirin use during pregnancy causes prolonged labor,low birth weight of babies,some times leads to PPH due to bleeding effect

Aspirin should be avoid in G-6PD deficient individuals heamolysis can occur.

4.Therapeutic uses of Aspirin.

  • Aspirin600mg with Codeine60 mg effectively relives inflammatory,tissue injury and integumental pain(it is analgesic effect of aspirin

Anti inflammatory action is exerted at high dose (3-6g/day).   

5.Medication administration:Aspirin adminstred through oral route..but it will start to absorb from the stomach due to poor water solubility.

These are the pharmacodynami actions of aspirin and its uses and contra indications due to aspirin.
