ANSWERS :

1. FLUID RECIEVE OVER THE 24 HOURS :

Maintenance fluid rate for an adult dog is calculated as 50 ml /kg/24 hrs.

in this question weight of dog is 48 lb.

1 lb = 0.454 kg.

  so, 48 lb = 48 * 0.45 kg

= 21.7

=22 kg.

Applying Formula :

Maintenace fluid for 22 kg dog per day is :

50 * 22 = 1,100 ml per 24 hour.

Fluid deficit can be calculated by estimating the prcentage dehydration. Here, percentage dehydration is 4% of body weight and this is converted to fluid units

22 * 0.04 = 0.88 kg

1 kg = 1 litre

  \therefore 0.88 kg = 880 ml.

If the fluid lost is to be replaced over 24 hours. the maintenance requirement is added to the fluid deficit to work out the total amount to be given over 24 hour period.

So here total fluid needed over 24 hr is

1100 ml ( maintenance ) + 880 ml ( fluid deficit)

= 1980 ml or 1.9 litre per 24 hours.

ONGOING LOSS :

  • Fluid rate adjusted according to the ongoing losses such as vomiting, diarrhoea.
  • Volume of fluid that is being lost should be estimated and then adjusted depending on disease progression and clinical assessment.

In this case total 4 cup volume fluid losses occured.

one cup = 100 ml.

so, four cup = 400 ml.

Total amount of fluid needed = 1100 + 880 + 400 ml

= 2380 ml.

b. RATE PER HOUR CALCULATION:

here dog needs 2380 ml fluid per 24 hr

so ,fluid needed per 1 hr (60 min) = 2380 / 60

=39.6 ml

= 40 ml per hour.

c. WHAT IS HIS FLOW RATE ?

Flow rate = amount of fluid needed per hour / 60

= 40 / 60

= 0.66 ml per minute.

How many drops per minute can be calculated by amount of fluid needed per minute multiplied by drops / ml that the giving set delivers.
