Acute blood specimen :

Acute blood sample is collected during the appearance of first clinical signs of the infection .

Convalescent blood specimen :

The convalescent blood sample is collected at the time of recovery of disease.

  1. Acute blood specimen is collected after appearance of symptoms
  2. Convalescent blood specimen is collected 7 to 10 days after collection of acute specimen.
  3. Among convalescent blood specimen Early convalescent blood sample at 1 to 2 days after subside of fever, where as Late convalescent blood sample is collected at 7 - 21days after acute sample drawn .

This test is usually used to detect dengue ,when acute phase is negative then the convalescent blood specimen is used to confirm the case.
