a. Imagine, for instance, that a new drug, X, has been approved for Rheumatoid arthritis. Its risks and benefits are about the same as in drugs now used. Would you need to disclose the following to your patients when prescribing them this new drug X?
i. The manufacturer will pay you $100 for each patient you successfully prescribe drug X to.
ii. You’re eager to see first-hand how X works.
iii. The manufacturer sponsored a lot of “free” lunches and gave you “free” books during your medical training.
a.A physician is the most trusted health care professionals in the medical field. It is the duty and legal responsibility of a physician to disclose when prescribing medication. As this medicine still falls under research category, the client who is going to consume it also comes under the research to assess its results. In such cases an informed consent has to be taken from the patient for approval. Disposal of the benefits and riskshas to be done to the patients because a patient has the rights either to accept or refuse treatment.
i. It is made mandatory that the physician are not supposed to offer this medicine for financial profits when it is a direct kickback. But a pharmaceutical company can provide money to doctors to promote their drugs or products according to Ornstein. As the doctors get more than what they get from practice, the Ornestein has made $10 for each prescribed medication and not more than that.
ii. The MD if really confident and finds out that this drug can be more beneficial than harming the patient depending upon their, age, illness stages, allergies, risk factors those patient can be prescribed after briefly describing to the patients. It is a must to have a regular follow up with the patients who is prescribed with this medication.
iii. It is a way of marketing their products which is legally acceptable like providing free lunches and free books during medical training. The attendees are stimulated to use ,buy or prescribe their drugs or products .The sole responsibility is the prescribed. The providers usually hold hand with the pharmaceutical company to bring new drugs for the benefits of the people.
