Consonants categorised according to:

- Voicing.

- Place of articulation (sit of constriction).

- Manner of articulation

52. Place of articulation will influence frequency of speech sound (from front of mouth to back of mouth)

53.The vocal folds are vibrating. All voicing sounds will have low frequency energy visible on their spectrograms.

Voiced stops

- In voiced stops, voicing continues during the closure phase.

- Closure phase is shorter in voiced stops than voiceless.

- VOT is shorter in voiced stops than in voiceless.

Voiceless stops

- Voices ceases during closure phase.

- Closure phase is longer in voiceless stops than in voiced stops.

- VOT is longer in voiceless stops than in voiced stops.

- VOT longest for voiceless stops made towards back of the mouth.

- Aspiration visible (voiceless stops in syllable onset in stressed positions).
