Effects of sugar include obesity as sugar-sweetened drinks such as the sodas, juices and sweet teas are rich in fructose, a simple sugar which increases our hunger and desire for food even more than glucose, the main sugar found in starchy foods.

Fructose consumption leads to resistance to leptin, an important hormone that regulates hunger and tells our body to stop eating. Thus as our body gains weight it develops insensitivity to insulin which in turn leads to diabetes, which leads to coronary heart diseases.
