Mycosis is a term given to the fungal infection. Fungal infection occur either due to inhalation of the spores or colonization of spores on the skin.
People who are at risk of developing mycosis are immunocompromised patients, HIV patients, diabetes, chemotherapy and older people.
Treatment involves antifungal medicine.
6. Four types of mycosis are :
1. Pityriasis versicolor : superficial mycosis characterised by hypo/hyperpigmentation of skin of the neck, shoulders, chest, and back. Caused due to Malassezia furfur.
2. Dermatophytoses : infects skin, nails , hair shaft and follicles
3. Chromoblastomycosis : subcutaneous mycosis which is characterised by verrucoid lesions of the skin and copper pennies.
4. sporotrichosis : caused by Sporothrix schenckii
7. Antifungal dugs are used to treat fungal infections. They are also known as antimycotic drugs. Some of the fungal infections treated by antifungsl drugs are ringworm, candidiasis, athletes foot.
Some of the antifungal drugs are :
1. Ciclopirox : hydroxypyridone antifungal
Useful in tinea versicolour.
2. Candicidin used for candidiasis
3. Amphotericin B used for aspergillosis
