Explain how the political and cosmopolitan conceptions of justice would respond to the following case: There are people living on two different islands. The groups know about
each other but do not interact. One group is affluent and the other is poor. Do the affluent have any obligations to assist the poor?
Political conception of justice, brings welfare and equality to the people and cosmopolitan conception of justice makes every individual to be universally important and develop interests. So, both of these conceptions of justice, are going to help poor people. Here, affluent people may not interact with the poor people, but they will be ready to help poor people in terms of their welfare, nutrition and healthcare so that community development among the poor people, takes place. It is due to the reason that affluent people treat people people also as human beings and think that they should also get basic amenities, as per the cosmopolitan conception of justice. So, affluent people find to have an obligation to assist poor people.
Indirectly, it also helps the
affluent people as poor people when assisted, do not follow the
path of crime or undercover activities. It maintains a peace and
prosperity in both the islands.

QUESTION 19 This question, and the three questions that follow it, have to do with the following paragraph from John Rawls's A Theory of Justice. One should not be misled, then, by the somewhat unusual conditions which characterize the original position. The idea here is simply to make vivid to ourselves the restrictions that it seems reasonable to impose on arguments for principles of justice, and therefore on these principles themselves. Thus it seems reasonable and generally acceptable that no...

Reflect on our contemporary nation state and discuss how it is different from one of the other political systems we have been reading about- chiefdoms, bands (foraging groups), or early agricultural states. Does this political system give us more or less freedom? Is it based on distinctions of self and other- how? Is it right that we exclude and discriminate against people who are not considered part of our nation? How do we reconcile the fact that our nation values...
Researchers followed tagged blue whales to observe how they respond to simulated military sonar-using sound levels much lower than those typically used during military exercises. The researchers also measured the speed and direction of whale swimming in response to the sound exposure. Whales increase their speed and swim away from the direction of sound. Design a study to test the hypothesis that this behaviour leads to beach strandings. Note that you will not receive permission to conduct the study if...
Most political philosophers believe we have a duty to obey laws, even if the laws in question do not have any moral grounding (e.g. laws about where to park, or laws prohibiting annoying but otherwise harmless behavior). Some argue that we are parties to a tacit agreement or contract with the state, and that it is the source of our political obligations. Others argue that the "contract" we have with the state is not anything we've ever tacitly or explicitly...
