Glucose consumed through the oral route is not readily available for entering into the systemic circulation. In contrast, the sublingual glucose administration allows glucose to pass through the sublingual mucosa and enter directly into the systemic circulation.

Oral glucose is subjected to first-pass liver metabolism, whereas the sublingual glucose bypasses this hepatic metabolism. However, oral glucose administration allows large volume of glucose administration at a time, whereas oral mucosa allows only small amount of glucose absorption due to smaller surface area.
