The history of coding dates back to 17th century from UK where the data collected from the London Bills of Mortality where arranged in numerical firm or and termed to be code.Later it was organized into International List of Causes of Death. As the years rolled on the WHO has used it to code the disease condition then emerged the International Classification of Diseases (ICD 9 with just 13000 codes has been upgraded with 68000 codes in ICD10 )whuch is widely in practice now.
The significant use of this is to classify and code the disease which can make the claiming of insurance fir the medical expenditure.
The ICD 9 has limited number of codes which doesn't classify for every specific procedures rather it is a mixture but ICD 10 classification clearly depicts the codes in accordance with the disesae conditions for each specific meducal conditions and procedures.
The vast number of codes has made the difficulty in remembering and staffs has to be given a repeated training otherwise errors are commo in ICD10
In next 10 to 20 years the ICD will be in practice in every countries.The medicine courses will have a separate session for its developing the skills of coding.
