The role of a nurse in maintaining fluid,electrolyte and acid base balance are

  • Assess the patients dehydration status
  • Monitor the vital signs,MSE
  • Make sure the maintainace fluid is given for the patient to prevent rebounce and to maintain a normal blood pressure
  • Electrolyte can be infused (concentrated NaCl ) when patient is in severe hyponatremia,because corrections of this is very necessary a loss of it will lead to altered mental sensorium
  • 0.9%NS is administered to correct hypotension
  • The physiological functions should be correlated with the renal function to assess the patiwnt
  • Elevate the lower limb to enable circulation and to prevent hypotension
  • Maintaining intake output chart gives a very clear idea of how much fluid is gained and lost.
