“How to Motivate Physicians to Improve Compliance”

Read the scenario.

A hospital, located within a highly competitive market, is concerned over a decline in its performance on national quality indicators. Although many members of the medical staff are cooperative and compliant with the required documentation, a group of physicians doesn’t seem willing to understand the importance of these measures. When either the hospital administration or members of the medical staff leadership confront these physicians, they often state they will try harder to be compliant, but ultimately don’t change their behavior. Others simply choose to ignore letters sent to them or any attempts to discuss their noncompliance. Frustrated by the lack of cooperation by these physicians, the hospital and medical staff leadership decided to get tough on enforcement. They designed a tiered response system. Physicians who do not meet the documentation requirements will be sent a warning letter. Failure to improve or respond will result in temporary loss of privileges. Continued lack of compliance will lead to loss of privileges.

Answer #1

1. The actual problem is that some of the physicians does not want to comply with the hospital policies and regulations. They want to work their own way without being under control of some one and used to practice unethically which lead to decline in the reputation and standard of the hospital .

2. The punitive system that was used to motivate the physicians to improve compliance was to get tough on enforcement by sending warning letter. Failure to improve or respond will result in temporary loss of privileges. Continued lack of compliance will lead to loss of privileges. Anything which is treated with punishment becomes more adverse and gets back to us more agitated and arrogant attitude which could cause destruction .

3. Recommendations to motivate physicians to improve compliance are :-

- use a punishment free motivation method

- use incentive / promotion methods ( the best method ) because , inceentivea will help in developing inner motivation and hence they will behave appropriately as per the regulations of the hospital .

- help them to develop inner motivation

- at last if none of the above works ,then cancellation of licence should be done .
