The patient has a history of having lived in the United Kingdom for 5 years prior to his return to the United States 10 years ago. His current mental status is declining and he is no longer ambulatory 1. What are the animal forms of this type of disease? 2. What is the significance of the patient having lived in the United Kingdom so long ago? 3. How will the instruments used be handled post- operatively? 4. What is the prognosis for the patient?

1.The animal form of disease is  called as Mad Cow Disease or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy.

2.People lived in UK before  2000 are at risk of getting this disease.This happened by eaying the infected meat .The animal got this disease by feeding them with on infected bone and meat containing infected tissue of brain and spinal cord called prion.One way of transmission to humans occured by eating processed beef burger,later a ban was done in 1996 on not to feed cattle with bone and meat.There are also a cause that most o UK population have this gene.

3.They are more potent than bacteria and virus and can stay innthe instrument for a longer time (it is even present in the tissues of a person after death)

The cleaning is first done by immersing the instrument for 1 hour in sodium hypochlorite solution ,then it is removed and subjected to be washed under water.Then it is put in a dry open porous autoclave machine for an hour,again cleansed and finally sent tor the routine sterilization

4.The prognosis is poor and death.Usually after diagnosis 70% of cases die less than a year
