Many of our most dangerous drugs today are regulated (Controlled Substances) and even many illicit drugs were used as medicines in the 1800's and early 1900's. Use your text and research online to determine why the marijuana of today is/or is not different from the marijuana of the early 1900's and even the 1960's. Be specific and support your opinions with references. Use caution in your sources, as many blogs and lobbying groups publish articles based mostly on their viewpoint and not so much on actual fact. Federal government regulated marijuana early in 1937 through the Marijuana tax act. In 1970, Controlled substance act placed marijuana on restrictive category, because it is not purposeful in medicinal use. But later, the National Organization of Reform of Marijuana use legalized the use of marijuana at the state level. During Obama period only 13 states are legalized but In 2017, 26 states have legalized the use of marijuana in the United States. Comparing marijuana now with the 1900s, there is a lot of difference present. In the 1960s only 16% of the country accepted marijuana use whereas today almost 60 -64% of country legalized the use of marijuana and they also used for recreation purposes. In early, it was sold in dispensaries which is not in uniform strength, but now it is regulated but not dispensed for minors. In early's marijuana used by soldiers during wars and now it is used for recreation purposes even though recreational use is not legalized in any state. When Comparing the substances, tetrahydrocannabinol is the important substance which produces psychoactive effects. According to NIDA, the level of THA content in marijuana in the 1900s is 3.74% whereas now the level of THA content is about 10%.
