POSTER PRESENTATION ON SAFETY OF OTC MEDICINES IN PREGNANT WOMEN:

OBJECTIVE:

To prepare a poster on the topic"safety of otc drug in pregnancy".

ABSTRACT:

SAFETY OF OTC DRUGS IN PREGNANCY:

The safety of OTC Medicines in pregnant ladies are not well studied since pregnant ladies cant participates in clinical trials, and there is a lack of adequaTE DATA.So it is strictly advised that pregnant ladies shouldn't take any medication without the advice of a doctor.Pregnant women should talk to doctor before taking any otc medicine,vitamin or supplements.The effect of these medicines on the fetus is not well studied.

DRUG SELECTION DURING PREGNANCY:

• The incidence of congenital malformation is approximately 3% to 6% and it is estimate that less than 1% of all birth defects are caused by medication exposure .
• Adverse effect on fetus depend on drug dosage,route of administartion,satege of pregnancy when exposure occured.
• Fetal exposure to a teratogen in first two weeks after coception may have an "all or nothing".effect on fetus.
• Exposure after this point may result in growth retardation,central nervous system or other abnormalities,or death.NSAID s and tetracycline derivatives are more likely to affect in second or third trimester.
• Avoid any OTC medications like drugs for cough ,cold,diarrhea,constipation,nausea ,vitamin tablets or supplements without the doctors advice during pregnancy.
• It is strictly advised that consumption of OTC drugs in first 12 to 13 weeks of pregnancy is avoided.it the time during which the risk is highest.
• Acetaminophen is safe for shortterm pain,but consult doctor before taking the drug.
• Do not consume aspirin unless in urgency as per doctors advice only.
• consuption of NSAIDS during third trimester may cause heart defects in the fetus.
• To care the baby well be aware that any drug we take have the chance to affect development of baby.  

PRICIPLES OF DRUG USE DURING PREGNANCY :

1)Selecting drugs that have been used safely for a long time.

2)Prescribing doses at lower end of dosing range.

3)eliminating non essential medications and discouraging self medication.

4)avoiding medications known to be harmful.
