Which of the following statements is FALSE?

Water follows the movement of electrolytes.
A cell will shrink when the concentration of electrolytes is greater inside the cell than outside the cell.
Diffusion is the process whereby substances move from a high concentration of solute to an area of low concentration.

Answer #1

Sodium and potassium move through special sodium-potassium protein pumps. Diffusion is not defined in terms of solute concentration. It is movement of molecules from their higher concentration to lower concentration. Also, cell will not shrink if it has large number of electrolytes as compared to outside of the cell. The cell will swell as it will take water from outside of the cell to maintain equilibrium.

Hence, second and third statements are false.

How are facilitated diffusion and diffusion similar? Both processes involve the movement of solute from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. Both processes involve the movement of solute from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. In both kinds of movement across a cell membrane, proteins do not play a role in assisting the passage of compounds and ions through a membrane. In both kinds of movement across a cell membrane,...
