HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY :

Hepatic encephalopathy is defined as reduced function in the brain due to certain liver diseases, Liver is known to metabolise and remove waste or toxins from the blood as it is not functioning properly it can lead to damage in the brain.

CAUSES :

  • Idiopathic.
  • Liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis.
  • Compromised immune systems.
  • Infections such pneumonia.
  • Increase protein intake.
  • Chronic kidney disease.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS :

  • Cognitive behavior changes.
  • Seizures.
  • Fatigue.
  • Anxiety.
  • Lethargy.

MANAGEMENT :

  • Antibiotics for infections.
  • Lactulose which helps in increasing the peristalsis movement in the colon helping you to pass bowel more often thereby decreasing the absorption of toxins in the blood.
  • I v fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • If the patient is unconscious then RT feed should be given in order to maintain healthy nutrition in the body.
  • Symptomatic treatment.
