Z test is used to compare the two population means. The test is performed in following steps,

Step 1: The null and alternative hypotheses are defined as,

Where, \mu_1​​​​​​ is the mean test score for Nov 2011 and 2 is the mean test score for Nov 2010.

This is a one tailed test (left tailed)

Step 2: The significance level is for the test, 0.05. The rejection region is defined by the critical value. The critical value for the z-statistic is obtained from z distribution table for significance level =0.05.

-1.645 for left tail)

Step 3: The z-statistic is obtained using the formula,

Step 4: Since,

1.873> -1.645)

The null hypothesis is rejected. Hence we can conclude that there is a significant less mean test score for Nov 2011 compare to Nov 2010.
