Compare and contrast finite and infinite loading as they pertain to Short-Term Scheduling. Use examples.
Finite loading or finite capacity scheduling recognises that each business organization employs a fixed amount of resources which they make available for carrying various process in order to produce the finished products in the short run,,,,,
While as infinite loading and capacity planning assumes that the orders are absolute and the additional capacity is made readily available by ignoring the resource constraints through disregarding the commitment of resources.
Infinite loading therefore does not take into consideration the capacity,,, While as the finite loading takes into consideration the current centre capacity and processing time of each job.
Infinite loading is performed throug backward scheduling from the order due date through loading the tasks to each of the work centres while as finite loading uses forward scheduling and thus schedules each operation involved in a job by taking into account the recognised capacity.
Infinite scheduling largely uses the lead times or work times of the production flow to back-schedule work to each resource
Finite schedules involves calculating of the lead time involved in manufacturing and requires careful planning and scheduling to stay within its resource constraints
.
The best example of a finite capacity loading in short run is the construction contractor who clearly identifies the capacity and resources to be employed, thus schedules each operation involved in a job by taking into account the recognised capacity
Another example can be that of an automobile manufacturers who take into consideration the capacity to provide service and processing time involved in servicing each vehicle
Software developers can be another example of short term scheduling where finite loading is used.
.
The best example of an infinite capacity planning and loading is that of an online retail giant which does not take into consideration the capacity and rather ignores the resource constraints and thus use backward scheduling in its processes.
