The 2 characteristics of chi-square distribution that are different from normal are the support for the distribution and the number of parameters.  

  1. If X is a random variable with normal distribution, the support for the variable is -00 < <. If Y is a random variable with chi-square distribution, the the support for the variable is 0<y<
  2. A normal random variable needs 2 parameters to define it, mean \mu and variance \sigma^2. A chi-square random variable needs just one parameter to define it, that is degrees of freedom \nu

A third characteristic which is different is the symmetry/skewness

A normal distribution is bell shaped and symmetric about the mean, where as a chi-square distribution is right/positively skewed.
