the time required decompose or disintegrate half of the original substance is called half life.

radioactive nuclides follows first order reaction mechanism . in first order reaction half life independent on initial amount. and half life will be same for any two intermediates dissociation.

formula for half life :    half life = 0.693 / rate constant

suppose inintially we have 100 g .if 50 g of substance consumed remaining is 50 g . that is called half life. if another 25 g consumed this another half life now also same time is taken

100 g ----first half life-------------> 50 g -----second half life --------------> 25 g ------third half life --------------------> 12.5 g
