would you store acids in metal containers? why or why not?
follow-up question: why was the magnesium put in a copper basket? ans why not some other metal?
Acids when stored in metal containers may corrode it by reacting with it ,so it is not recommended to store acids in metal containers.
Acid +Metal ---->salt + hydrogen
example: nitric acid +calcum --->calcium nitrte +hydrogen
Copper is a noble metal and very less reactive than magnesum to acids.But other metals (expect gold and silver) are reactive to acids so may get corroded when used as containers to react those metals and acids.
