Question
Calculate the mass ratio of one element to the other for the first sample. Then repeat for the second sample.
Chapter 1 Adaptive Follow-Up For Practice 1.1 Constants Periodic Table Two samples of carbon dioxide decompose into their constituent elements. One sample produces 52.8 g of oxygen and 19.8 g of carbon, and the other sample produces 17.1 g of oxygen and 6.40 g of carbon. Show that these results are consistent with the law of definite proportions

Answer #1

Law of definite proportions state that a chemical formula always contain elements in fixed ratio.

So, from first sample

Mass ratio of elements is:

Mass of Oxygen / Mass of Carbon = 52.8g /19.8 g = 2.67

In second sample:

Mass ratio of elements is:

Mass of Oxygen/ Mass of Carbon = 17.1 g / 6.40 g = 2.67

Thus, the ratio is same in both compounds. Hence it follows the law
