Oxidation state of the compound is always calculated for central metal atom and in potassium chromate the central aton is Cr.

So oxidation state of Cr in potassium chromate is calculated as

Oxidation stare of Cr. =( (2*1)+(7*-2))/2 = +6

As oxidation state of K is +1 nad that of O is -1

So oxidation state of Cr in K2Cr2O7 is +6
