Why Android? Why not iOS or Windows Phone? What are some of the strengths and

weaknesses of Android? Are there opportunities or threats?

As an operating platform, Android has a number of advantages and capabilities which makes it a better consideration for us.

1. It is open source, backed up by Google and one of the most widely used operating systems in the world.

2. Allows better connection with Google services which makes it easier for developers to develop applications that can make the best use of the process.

3. The OS isn’t a device or manufacturer restricted, which makes it better for development in consideration of the market.

4. The cost implication is lower for a developer when they need to consider beginning to develop for the OS, device testing is easier as any android based device can be used for testing which means even the cheapest devices can be used for the process.

The weaknesses are based on its advantages and strengths in the fact that:

1. A larger number of devices make testing processes harder to be consistent on every device.

2. Open source also means that the competition would be higher even with far inferior quality applications.

3. It is prone to external threats such as malware since the system isn’t close ended like iOS.

No matter the consideration, the fact remains that it is the most widely used OS, a number of manufacturers make devices for it as well as the fact that it is easier to get into for newer developers can be considered as an opportunity more than a threat. Other than the aspect of security, Android compares to most of the other OS’ on all the fronts with an equal footing.
