It is given that p value is less than 0.05.

Decision Rule

  • Critical value approach: If the calculated value is greater than the critical value, then we reject null hypothesis at the specified level of significance, whereas if calulated value is less then critical value, we fail to reject null hypothesis i.e. null hypothesis is accepted.
  • P value approach: If p value is less than the specifeid level of significance, which is usually 0.05 or 0.01, then we reject null hypothesis, and if p value is greater than level of significance then we accept null hypothesis.

In this question since p value is less than 0.05, therefore, null hypothesis is rejected. So, the answer is:

"The obtained value exceeds the critical value (5.99) so the null hypothesis must be rejected. You can therefore conclude that there is probably a difference in the number of DL students voting for chocolate, strawberry or vanilla ice cream flavors."
