A 1.00 liter solution contains 0.49 moles hypochlorous acid and 0.38 moles potassium hypochlorite .

If 0.19 moles of hydrochloric acid are added to this system, indicate whether the following statements are true or false.

(Assume that the volume does not change upon the addition of hydrochloric acid.)

_______TrueFalseA. The number of moles of HClO will decrease.

_______TrueFalseB. The number of moles of ClO- will increase.

_______TrueFalseC. The equilibrium concentration of H3O+ will increase.

_______TrueFalseD. The pH will decrease.

_______TrueFalseE. The ratio of [HClO] / [ClO-] will increase.

Answer #1

Hypochlorus acid dissociates as follows

HClO <======> H+ + ClO-

(A) False. The no. Of moles f HClO will increase because HCl is strong acid and produce H+ ions so due to common ion effect HClO moles will increase.

(B) FALSE, because due to common ion effect H+ priduction will reduce so as ClO- will also reduce.

(C) TRUE, because additional H+ are produced due to HCl.

(D) TRUE, as H3O+ increases pH decreases.

(E) TRUE, because HClO increases and ClO- decreases.
