Answer #1

Standard enthalpy change = 25.7 kJ/mol

Standard entropy change = 95 J/mol.K = 0.095 kJ/mol.K

Temperature = 25 degree C = 298 K

For a reaction to be spontaneous, change in Gibbs energy must be negative.

For mular for change in Gibbs energy is,

\DeltaG = \Delta H - T\DeltaS

\DeltaG = 25.7 - 298 ( 0.095 )

\DeltaG = - 2.61 kJ/mol

Since change in Gibbs energy is negative, the reaction is spontaneous.

    Instant cold packs used to treat athletic injuries contain solid NH4NO3 and a pouch of water. When the pack is squeezed, the pouch breaks and the solid dissolves, lowering the temperature because of the endothermic reaction NH4NO3(s)+H2O(l)→NH4NO3(aq) ΔH= +25.7 kJ. What is the final temperature in a squeezed cold pack that contains 43.5 g of NH4NO3 dissolved in 125 mL of water? Assume a specific heat of 4.18J/(g⋅∘C) for the solution, an initial temperature of 29.0 ∘C, and no heat...
