THREE MOUNTAIN TASK
Purpose
Jean piaget, a swiss psychologist created the three mountain task to find out the concept of egocentrism in a child's thinking. it was tested among children of different ages to determine at which age the child begins to take other's perspective into own consideration.
Procedure
during this task a child is given a set up of three mountains in front of he desk where he is seated where mountains were of different sizes and also had different identifiers as one had snow on the top, one mountain a red cross on the top and the last one had a hut on the top. now the child had to circumfernce all three mountains . then after a doll is placed at different points and after that the child is shown with generally 10 photographs and the child has to select from the various photpgraphs the best possible view from doll's perspective.
Results
The children of age 4-5 would generally choose the photograph which showed their own perspective. for childern of age 6 a difference in perspective than from their own could be seen. children of age 7-8 were found to be able to distinguish and acknowledge others perspectives as well.
HUGHES POLICEMAN DOLL STUDY
Purpose
To find out at what age was a child able to decenter their thoughts or say was no longer egocentric among children of 3-5 years of age.
Procedure
What hughes designed was two intersecting walls where the child was given a doll ad was then later followed up by showing a police doll. the child had to hide their doll from the police doll as the police doll could no longer see theirs. it was tried froe various different positions. then later a scond police doll was introduced as well and were set up at two different points and the child had to hide rheir doll from the range of the police dolls keeping in mind the two different viewpoints.
Results
The children gave almost 90% correct answers even when there were two police dolls and in a more complex situation where a third doll was introduced too. the results showed that 90% of 4 years old gave correct answers which means by this study that a child is able to decenter their thoughts by the age of 4.
Difference in studies
The results of jean piaget were different from that of hughes because the design of piaget was a bit too complex for the child where as in hughes's test the child was a lot more involved in the task. three mountain task could not enable a child's own thinking to differentiate fron others whereas for hughes it was much approachable for a child to acknowledge the perspctive on their own with keeping in considertion others viewpoints. the three mountais task showed that when a child is 7 years of age is able to decenter his/her thoughts but in case of hughes police doll task a child could decenter his/her thoughts when at age 4 with 90% giving correct answers and 60% correct answer rate for 3 years old.
Summary
For what i think is both these tests are good but he thee mountain task in not much intriguing for the child. Hughes police doll task ignites a better thinking about other perspectives.
