Question

Error Analysis Questions for Alum Synthesis Experiment 1. After collecting the alum product from the synthetic experiment, a chemist calculates a percent yield of 108.9%. What does this suggest regarding the purity of the resulting two possible reasons for such a high percent yield. 2. Assuming the sulfuric acid (H SO.) added is insufficient to fully react with all of the Al(OH),, how would this affect the theoretical yield of alum. Discus your reasoning in the context of limiting reagents

Answer #1
  1. Possible reasons are :
    1. The aluminium taken is already impure containing sulphates, which increase the yield.
    2. The measurements taken are wrong.
  2. In this case, sulfuric acid is the limiting reagent, thus, the theoretical quantity (gram equivalents) of alum produced would be equal to the equivalents of sulfuric acid. Addition of Al(OH)3 will not matter.

Experiment Write Up Proposal You will write up a synthesis procedure for one reaction that could be potentially run in a face- to-face Chem 2321 lab session. Your proposal will include an introduction and procedure. The procedure will include step-by-step instructions for running the reaction (including reaction monitoring), work-up. (product isolation and purification), and analysis (characterization). You will need to include sample calculations for percent yield and provide sample spectra analysis. You must upload your proposal as a single document...
