Gas Evolution Reaction:

  • A gas evolutin reaction is a chemical reaction in which one of the end products is a gas is produced.
  • acid-base reactions are a specific type of gas evolution reaction.
  • these are also gas evolution reactions that are formed by the mixing of two aqueous solutions.
  • these reactions are sub-type of double replacement reactions.
  • most of gas evolution reactions are done in a fume chamber because some gases are very poisonous when inhaled while other gases are explosive.

possible errors and treatment of errors:

  • During the analysis of Gas evolution reaction, there is two parts of analysis. one is , The gradient of the curve provide the rate of reaction and a plot of ln k against 1/T gives a straight line with gradient-Ea/R from Arrhenius equation is other one.
  • clearly this is a long experiment as several runs must be carried out to obtain the order of reaction and then several more at different temperatures to obtain the activation energy.
  • instrumental tolerences can be summed as percentages for each measurement to find the overall instrument error. for example the gas syringe alone has a inaccuracy about \pm 1 . this equation to an average percentage error of about 2%.
  • however, probably the greatest inacccuracy comes from gauging the slope of tangent to the curve at t=0.
  • they are likely to be issues with temperature control in part-2 , unless the reaction is carried out under thermostatically controlled conditions, which is not always available in school.
