1. Consider unknown compounds made of C, H and O atoms. Explain how you expect the water solubility of a compound to change as it's weight percent oxygen increases.

2. What is the advantage of using a mixed melting point analysis to identify a compound? Does your mixed melting point value identify your isolated material as cholesterol?

Question 1.

The solubility of organic compounds depends on many different things .

For compound containing C,H and O as the CH​​​​​3 group increase the solubility is decreased because it has hydrophobic nature and as no of CH​​​​​3 group increase the solution becomes less polar and hence its solubility in water decreased ( like dissolved like)

When the weight % of oxygen is increased the compound becomes more and more polar and with increase in oxygen the hydrogen bonding capability of the compound also increase together the results into increase in the solubility of compound. In water.

For example carboxylic acid has more oxygen then alcohol and hence has more polar nature more hydrogen bond which result into better solubility in water.

Question 2

Melting point is also one of the factor or property of any compound by taking the unknown samples melting point we can compare it with known values of the compound and if they are same or near to each other we can assume or predict that compound .

The problem with this method is there may be more than one compound having similar melting point. In such situation we can't really tell what compound is it.

In such cases mixed melting point method is used. In this method we mix our unknown compound with the known and expected compound with both having similar volume and we !is them evenly with mortar.

After checking the melting point if the melting points remains the same we have the predicted compound which we mixed with the unknown samples is confirmed.

Yes this method can be used to identify materials like cholesterol.
