
In the first step, due to the presence of an acid, an H+ is added to the olefin. The H+ gets attached to the terminal carbon as then a tertiary carbocation is obtained. If it would have attached with the internal carbon, then we would have obtained a primary carbocation. Tertiary carbocations are always much more stable than a primary carbocations.
Once, the carbocation is generated, H2O in the reaction mixture will behave as a nucleophile and donate electron density to the carbocation.
In the final step, to attain electrical neutrality, a H+ would be lost from oxygen and the final product, a tertiary alcohol is obtained.
