The particle deflection is greater at position R. Since at R, the deviation is started as, there exist coloumbic repusion is takes place between alpha particle ( posively charged ) and nucleus of gold foil ( positively charged )

Coloumbic repulsion force is

Here, q1 and q2 are charges and r is separation between the charges

Here, the force is inversely proportional to square of distance between charges. As distance between nucleus and particle is less at R, it deflected more due to repulsive force.
